• The literacy campaign
  • PROJECTS

Our objective is to facilitate schooling for as many girls and orphans possible from our province. This project is the oldest and started in the school year 1999 - 2000.

  • The problem

A lot of parents in Burkina Faso do not have enough money to pay for the school material and the school uniform. Usually there are only enough means to send one child to school which as a rule is the eldest son. Due to the difficult living conditions most children are forced to quite school because their parents cannot pay for the school material.

  • The education project

With the help of sponsorships, NEEED tries to compensate these shortcomings by carrying the costs for the school uniform and the school material. Every girl and orphan taking part in our education programme receives their school uniform and the school material for free. This removes the first fundamental obstacle that blocks the paths for parents to send their children to school.

  •  The results
  •

During the time span of 1999 - 2005 NEEED has been able to give more than 800 girls the chance to go to school by the means of sponsorships and other aid. But still there are many girls awaiting support.
Momentarily there are 28 schools of the province Yatenga participating in NEEED's literacy campaign. We are very happy and proud because our project shows that with little means such a long - term effect is possible. In our picture gallery you will find a selection of pictures from our school classes and school children that visit our schools.

  • Why are only girls and orphans supported?

This can be explained by the fact that girls and orphans are most at a disadvantage. As we have already mentioned there is not enough money to send all children of a family to school so that only one child has the privilege which most often is the eldest son. NEEED tries to balance out this disadvantage by calculated developmental funds.

The enrolment rate for girls amounts to only 14.51% whereas the boys 42.26% of the boys are enrolled in school. This shows the strong discrepancy and that specific measures to bring about a change must be taken. More than 85% of all girls have yet not had the chance to go to school.
Women play an important roll in building up a society as they hold an essential position in society as mothers and as the centre of family life. Therefore learning to read and write for women and girls has a lasting and extremely positive effect on the education of their children and the development of our country.

  • Who finances the school project & how high are the cost?

The financial means for the expenses of school material are provided by the godparents and partners of this project in:

    • Austria (Salzburg, Linz, Tamsweg, Göriach, Dornbirn, Kirchdorf an der Krems, Vienna, Graz, Pettenbach),
    • Germany (Munich, Saarbrücken, Lübeck),
    • USA (California, New York, Washington) and
    • UNICEF, l’organisation des Nations Unies pour l’enfance.

Every godparent sponsors the primary education of one child over a time span of six years. The yearly costs of a sponsorship are € 73 or $ 94.
